I'm trying to decide if living on lentils and water for the next month is worth getting a new tablet. It's starting to look appealing. Been trying to draw things that don't need the entire surface of my tablet, but it's not really working the way I want it to - the tablet is meant for full-screen interaction so I end up spending just as much time trying to navigate my way to a usable part of the surface as I do drawing. And I can forget about any chance to draw anything detailed right now, close-ups take up too much space on the screen. ARGH, I don't know what to do. /o\

There's still some life left in my baby (though very little patience left in me) and I've done some doodles as I try to convince myself that my tablet is organic and will most likely heal itself somehow (please?).

I've had a, uh, volatile relationship with Jock's art since I read The Losers comic. Honestly, I really fucking hated it in the beginning, I couldn't stand the messy lines and the huge amount of black blocky shadows everywhere - almost didn't buy the comic because of it. But of course it grew on me and I found myself really impressed, Jock has an amazing sense of layout and motion in his works, despite the rough drawings. Admittedly, there were phases in the artwork where Jock'd had really bad days or an assistant artist had taken over (Downtime Arc in book one and another in book two) and I'd let out a breath of relief once the art was back to normal.

I've tried to copy his style (can't be that hard) and it is so much harder than it looks. At first I thought it might be a way to cut corners, if you can just cover half the face or body in shadow it'd save you a hell of a lot of work for sure. To some extent, I guess there is a bit of truth in that, but to use it as effectively as Jock does - to apply such large amounts of black shadowing requires you to know how to make a character recognisable as a silhouette or a partially covered face/body and to make it work. Jock is the master of that, hands down.

And while this was really fun to do, I almost broke my brain trying not to nitpick at uneven lines and correct faults, the fact that Jock seems to incorporate and work around mistakes on top of being really damn fast (as far as I've heard), I've got to hand it to him. This may look like the product of five minutes altogether, it took so much longer, let me tell you!

Disclaimer: This character does not belong to me, nor am I making any money from this.

Tried to mix Jock's comic style with Oscar Jaenada as Cougar.

Seriously, I cannot fucking even. I love Cougar so much, it's not even funny. This was referenced from this screencap.

I also realised that every time I'm drawing I'm listening to Midnight City by M83. It is the best muse song ever and works miracles when going to the gym. Magic music is what it is.

Ahhh... The lentils and water stage is never fun, I'm so sorry your tablet is being a jerk.

Have you considered taking commissions? I know some people don't enjoy it, but I've seen people with less than a fourth of your talent make decent money doing it. At the very least it'll help take a small chunk out of the total cost.

But... Jock-style! :DDDDD THIS IS AMAZING! I WANT TO HUG MY COMPUTER TO MY CHEST AND TELL IT HOW GORGEOUS THESE PIXELS OF YOURS ARE! \o/

I'm a major fan of Jock, his work is gritty and dangerous, and you've done an amazing job making it your own! I LOVE both of these SO MUCH!

((Also, I just want to say that you are above and beyond most artists when it comes to working with guns. Normally I feel the urge to nit-pick the guns in people's art to the point I have to just e-walk away and pretend I didn't see anything so I'm not the King of the Jerks, but you've done a great job with your reference! \o/ <3 ))

Yeah and I think it might definitely happen, I can't function without my tablet, so it'll just have to be worth it.

I really, really have, several times, but since I've never done it, I panic about, who the hell would WANT my stuff, how would I manage the money (I have no concept of paypal, nada), I kinda freak out and go hide under my rock again.

Ahhh this makes me SO HAPPY, THANK YOU THANK YOU, I'm so glad you like it!!!

I gotta be honest, I hated Jock's style, but now I freaking love it. Gritty and dangerous is exactly right, but yay, you have no idea how happy this makes me!!!

((Seriously man, you're going to make me cry with your words, thank you so much, I do try to get it as right as possible. Some guy said to me once, 'If you're not willing to work your art to it's full potential, then don't bother at all', so yeah, that's me being a psycho about details and such :D))

Well, I'll put down $30 towards a commission of what ever the heck you feel like drawing when ever you end up drawing it if you get your paypal working. It's not much, but it's a start! Besides, your art makes so many people happy, it'd be a shame to deprive them of it! :D

DON'T CRY!! Not unless it's a good cry! You deserve it! Your art is amazing! (Also, you are too!) <3

I wish I could come out of the screen and hug you! No lie <333

And it's happy crying, I swear, but don't think I won't sob on you, because I will :D

I think you're awesome! Looking at your art makes me want to re-read the comics, so I think you've done a great job of capturing his style. Fantastic!

This is fantastic! I have only seen a few panels of the comic book art, but agree that it's a very distinctive style and -- at least at first -- off-putting. Your comments are helping me appreciate it more.

Would you allow me to turn the second one into an icon? With credit, of course.

Oh my, you might just have made me squee with that awesome Cougar-shilhoutte-on-red-background (the second drawing ^__^). I don't know why, but it just works for me. Soooo, I have a question: may I print it on sticky foil and put it on the back of my blackberry? Because when I bought it I gave it the device name 'Cougar' and the sticker would fit it so perfectly... (yeah, you're not the only one who loves Cougar. Actually, my laptop is called 'Cougs' and has it printed in huge letters all over the lid in the font of the character presentation of the movie. I might be a bit obsessed XD). So, thank you so very much for creating this beautiful piece of art! I think I'm going to sneak around your Lj now to look at your other works ^^

PS: Stupid question, but you're the one who wrote me this impressive comment on my Haldir/Éomer fics on AO3, aren't you? I think your username is quite unique, so I was guessing... *pondering on it* Anyway, nice to meet again ^^

Awww thank you, and sure, go ahead, use it as you like (OMG, could you take a picture and show me if you can, I'd really love to see it)! Cougar, I literally cannot explain my love for that guy GAH!

And yes, that was me <333 I still go back and read that sometimes, god I love that fic!!!

Sure, I'll make a picture and send it to you once I've glued Cougar to Cougar XDD More love for Cougs! *gets pompoms* XD

Ha, so it was you! Cool, here we meet again by total chance (I saw your Mayan!Cougar on my flist, that's how I got here and wondered why I have never seen your great art before. I'm still looking around and I like a lot what I see ^^). I feel honoured that you still love the fic, that means a lot! I have some of those re-read fics and I treasure them all (there's this hot one of Jensen and Cougar and the shower!sex against the wall... I don't know how many times I've read it. The sex scene is just *so delicious*!)

Ah, thank you <333 I'll look forward to seeing it *excited*

I love re-reading fics. Especially since I find that, somehow, on the first read I've missed things that'll I'd pick up on the second go. And are you talking about the fic Pushing Boundaries by Marvinetta on AO3?
